Cryptic Clues

Today's 'The Age' cryptic crossword, as always on a Friday - when compiled by DA - was challenging. The theme was George Orwell, although it took me quite a while to figure that out (and I still haven't finished it, to be honest).

My favourite clue was for 15-down:

The clue reads: 20-across (the answer to which was 'Animal Farm') tyrant meets an Aussie director, says Spooner, at the end of 30-across's (the answer to which was 'Orwell') road. (5,4)

The answer was 'Wigan Pier'.

Of course, The Road to Wigan Pier was a book written by Orwell, and so it's obvious what's at the end of 30-across's road...but it much more clever, isn't it?

Aussie director = Weir
Animal Farm (20-across) tyrant = pig
The word 'an' must be in there somewhere, because it is 'met'

Thus we get 'Pig an Weir'....but of course, that has to be 'Spoonerised', and becomes 'Wigan Pier'.

Brilliant!

Thanks, James...it took me ages to get that one...but I like it because it has so many clues within clues. A bit like life, really - if you can't 'get it' one way, there's always another! xxx
